Newspaper Rock: New Insights Into An Iconic Rock Art Panel

Join in to learn more about how Newspaper Rock changed and evolved over time!

UPAN welcomes Jason Chuipka and Shanna Diederichs
of Woods Canyon Archaeological Consultants, Inc., as they present their research into the history of Newspaper Rock.
Newspaper Rock is one of the most iconic rock art panels in all of the American Southwest. Located along Indian Creek within Bears Ears National Monument and near Canyonlands National Park, it has attracted visitors for thousands of years. The panel contains more than 800 high quality elements attributable to many different traditions -- Desert Archaic, Ancestral Pueblo, Fremont, Ute, Navajo, and historic Euro-American. Recent detailed recordation and analysis has provided new insights into the history of the panel and the various traditions represented by the images.
