Beginning at the ranger station, the Kane Gulch Trail can be completed as a three day backpack loop through Bullet Canyon Trail. The trail begins with a desert wash, and in about a mile, hikers will come across an unusual stand of aspen trees that have been cloned from the same tree for 11,000 years.
The canyon walls become more imposing as the trail progresses, and hikers will need to cross the stream multiple times. At 4.0 miles, there is a major side canyon with a huge grove of cottonwoods, and the Junction Dwellings can be seen up on the cliff. Further along the trail, at 7.2 miles, is the Turkey Pen Dwelling with its petroglyphs and a set of sticks that have stood for nearly 1,000 years. At 10 miles is the Split Level Dwelling, and past that is Coyote Canyon, with its incredible pictographs at the Green Mask Dwelling. After reaching the end of the canyon, most hikers will return the way they came.
