Ancient Astronomy Exhibit and Presentation
Art of Ancient Astronomy, an exhibit by artist/scholar Jim Krehbiel will open at the Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum Saturday January 21, 2023.
The artwork was inspired by his archaeosastronomy research in San Juan County, Utah over the past 14 years. His work has examined solar, lunar, and celestial direct viewing alignments at over 340 Ancestral Pueblo sites on public land.
Krehbiel will give a presentation on his work Saturday January 21 at 2:00 pm. During the presentation Jim will introduce a few time-lapse sequences of rising and setting events and in two instances will provide evidence of unique new discoveries in his field research—kiva alignments with celestial events and prehistoric awareness of the precessional change in star positions. He will show how these discoveries are transformed through drawing and mark making into the digital imaging art pieces on display in the exhibition.
The archaeoastronomy research in this presentation was done in collaboration with Natalie Cunningham, writer and astronomer.
